The Song of the Kansas Emigrant, an anthem of people settling Lawrence, Manhattan, Topeka and Osawatomie, Kansas. Each town was aided by the New England Emigrant Aid Society, an abolitionist group encouraging anti-slavery in Kansas Territory prior to the Civil War.
The Pony Express began on April 3, 1860. At the time we were building toward a Civil War. There were 31 states from Missouri and east, but also California and Oregon on the west coast. There was a desire for speedy communication over the vast distance. Riders were young men, averaging around 20, with the oldest in his 40's and the youngest only 11.
